Personalized radio in your PDA: Podcasting

For those who have not heard of podcasting, or do not know what it is exactly, according to Wikipedia

The word podcasting is a blend of the words iPod and broadcasting. However, there is no need an iPod to listen because it is audio files that can be played on any device depending on the format: mp3, ogg, etc.. According to many authors, the term could also be caused by Pod, which translates as a capsule or pod in English and also gave its name to the iPod.

A podcast is like a magazine subscription to a speech in which he received the programs over the Internet. Their content is diverse, but often a weblogger speaking on various topics. This is the basic definition. However, it may be expanded in different ways. There are podcasts on various subjects, especially in technology. Some people prefer to use a script and others speak of a cappella and improvised manner. Some seem a radio program, interspersing music, while others are shorter and podcasts exclusively with voice, as with weblogs.

In defining podcasting, stories in also added

The main advantages of podcasting compared to the mere placement of sound files on a web page is unionization, namely the possibility that a program or a Web service remember to visit every so often the sources and check for new files to download to listen.

Faced with the streaming, or broadcasting of sound through the Internet, podcasting offers independence, mobility and freedom of schedule. That is, can be heard on any portable device that plays MP3 (or your choice of format), in any place, without limitations on coverage or connection to the network, and at any time, as it is recorded.

In short, to be informed when new podcast is posted, using the same method as for posts on a blog: an RSS feed. Therefore, a standard RSS aggregator can be invoked to this task. However there are programs specifically created to more effectively manage our podcasts. I give you speak of that I use regularly, Juicer (formerly known as iPodder).

Juicer is a program, of course, with GPL (free software) and multi-platform (Windows, OS X, Linux and soon), which essentially manages a list of RSS feeds for podcasts that we want to hear, and is responsible for download Audio files automatically, saving them in directories, for a podcast. Once on a hard drive, we'll just copy them to the SD card from the Palm (which will occupy a lot megs), with any method of those who commented earlier.

Juicer in the version for Windows

Juicer has more features, such as erase podcast after a certain time, not to fill our hard disk, keep a log of downloaded podcasts to find out whom are recent and not an internal directory of podcasts to find us interest, support for importing and exporting OPML files, and so on.

To listen to our podcasts on the PDA only need a standard music player. With my Tungsten E2 was the Real Player for Palm, which is free. Also on TCPMP plays MP3, among other formats. TCPMP is a complete player both audio and video, in addition to being free software, so I will talk about it in detail later.

Now that we know how to download podcasts, only to find that interest us among the wide variety out there. A very complete listing of those available in Spanish what you'll find in the actual stories. I warn that hooked, since I subscribed to a few podcasts, almost not hear music when I go down the street with my Palm and headphones. The Content available is varied and high quality, and increasingly going for the better. It would be interesting to anyone who wants to recommend a podcast to listen, or to make himself, the comments posted in the address. And if you have not already done so, the directory of stories is waiting!
