Using the Palm for creating and managing good passwords (and II)

After the post yesterday, we already know how to choose good passwords. But to be safe, we have to have so many and so difficult to remember, how can we manage not to stop using the third day out of boredom? So easy, using one of the many specific programs for such purposes that exist for the Palm.

The advantages are numerous. By using the Palm to keep our passwords will keep them always at hand and in a known site, so do not lose and if we bring up the Palm will be available. In addition, we save having to memorize them. In passing, we carry more important information like bank account numbers, private phone numbers and other confidential information. And the keys can be organized by categories, to avoid clutter.

Moreover, even if someone gets access our PDA, it can be done with them, as these programs prohibit access by unauthorized users than us with a global password. So we reduce the problem of memorizing all to memorize one, which therefore may be more complex. And we will not have to memorize them, these programs include the option to automatically create highly secure random passwords when we need a new one.

Once seen its usefulness, will discuss the programs that I liked most of what I have tried:

  • As always, the first is free software. But in this case greatly: how can we trust the security of a program (we do not provide access to information without knowing the global password, which has no back doors, etc.), if no one can see how it's done? I therefore recommend Keyring. It is a user-friendly application, available in Spanish. Lets write a text along with the password (for any related information you need to have on hand). Have the random password generator that I spoke earlier with a lot of options to get passwords are completely random or pronounceable, the size you choose, to include only alphanumeric characters or symbols, etc.. Use the encryption algorithm triple DES with 112-bit key, making it very safe. A truly comprehensive program.

  • Keyring uses a powerful encryption algorithm

  • Another free program, although not free, I enjoyed it Yaps. It is much simpler, with less functionality than Keyring, but instead deals only 61kB, which for older computers can be an advantage. Use encryption Blowfish 256 bit.
  • Finally I also recommend SplashID.

Published: Bywater has prevented me in the comments that SplashID is not free. I downloaded a few months ago on a temporary promotion, which offered the registered version, but has returned to shareware version, limited to 30 days of use. Still, do not delete what I wrote about him, in case anyone finds it of interest.

Although the full version, which includes program for Palm and PC (to enter information more comfortably), is commercial, I discovered by chance that if you download only the Palm version is completely free. Includes password generator that same Keyring, which is a definite plus. Care is more aesthetically, with ability to assign icons to different categories, and allows editing of the types of information to be saved, customizing the data fields, so to have such a kind of "bank" with fields "account number" and " secret number, etc.. It was used until I discovered that Keyring, and I think also a good program. It uses the Blowfish encryption algorithm.

Splash is more colorful and customizable

I recommend trying all three to decide which suits you more, because everyone does well with its function. I have no excuse for using passwords undesirable, thanks as always to the great value of our Palm. And for those who are as clueless as I, these programs will save many times we lose tomorrow because we remember our data to enter into any account that we need to use.
