For those who do not know, the sigiente version of Palm OS 6.0, has named key Cobalt. It is the eternally desired but indefinitely postponed. As can be read on the page itself of PalmSource, incorporates everything you could miss at least the current Palm OS Garnet. Some new features, most notable for the end user, are:

- New compatibility with the purpose of translucency in windows
- Adaptive fonts, including TrueType writing system for Western, Japanese and Chinese.
- Status Bar customizable and dynamic.
- Applications for managing personal information enhanced with new elements of user interface and navigation in five directions.
- User interface based on tabs.
- Bluetooth 1.2 stack. Profiles supported: generic access, serial port, dial-up networking through terminal and gateway (new), LAN access, applications for the discovery of services, generic object exchange, sending objects without prior request, headphones (new), handsfree ( new), and PAN (PANU) and NG (new).

A capture of Cobalt in action
However, there are so many rumors pointing to the imminent release of Cobalt, as the abandonment of this operating system and Linux advocates (as already commented here). For now, we will continue waiting. Although not many things that you can miss at least PalmOS 5, especially for use realistic: not thinking about what I could do but does not need him. Or is this just a way of consolation?

Yes, the Cobalt this is very good looking but I fear that three or four years ago we heard about it and never arrives. The truth is that I think is more of an aesthetic improvement to how a real operating system upgrade. I think now if you have a good launcher and good applications installed on your Palm OS 5 you can have the same productivity. A real change for me would be a Palm with Linux. That phrase would be greater. Greetings!
I agree with you, a Palm with Linux would open the door to a huge amount of software already developed or developing. You only have to see what happens with the PSP and the ability to run programs made by third parties.
The problem might be that. If you start to appear free programs that do the same as those sold, and maybe better What would happen with business software for Palm?
Marco, this is a good starting point. That happen with all these companies that produce software for palm?, But we must also consider that free software does not have the same quality and benefits offered by the software manufactured and sold by third parties, so probably the future of these companies not is so dark.
I HAVE NOT VERY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS THE COBALT can be mounted on a TX, it is possible
For Marcos Gonzalez Troy:
This conversation is already time, but I dare to write a comment.
The question arises, before an operating system based on Open Source, the fate of companies who live to create, sell, and so on., Software for a given platform, as in the example of our interest, the Palm OS.
It seems to me that this was no attack, is a posture of fear of change, an evil that affects us all face different circumstances. I know I do not speak either of your case, but the companies that distribute, create, sell, and so on., And those of the Third Party. You're comment because (you will note) rather than immersed in the world of PDAs. But I invite you to let us see what happens next. I dare make a prediction: the companies of all sizes, committed to offering various solutions in the Palm OS platform, will evolve, some will inevitably disappear, but the environment will be maintained, and with renewed vigor.
Often we all have visions fatalistic when approaching a change that affects us, especially when we have no ability to influence it. And it is not uncommon for a change we threaten to "get us out of the game" altogether. See if you know, I live in Mexico, a country that is economically very unstable.
But I argue the position that the sun comes out for all, that is, we all have a real chance to live, compete and thrive, each with its scale and its surroundings, and the giants of our environment we represent a imposing competition does not necessarily destroy us, but rather defines what can and what we can not, a change must be a strong motivating to renew us and keep us in the lane.
Every time you think: now you, this came up here (on the subject that is), I remember all the times I have said that now it does now, just the World, which, for us it is invading gringos; in order.
You command a salute you and congratulate you on one of the best Web sites I have met this year. We are in contact.
Hello HAL, after thread has been seen as running applications in Nokia Nseries PalmOS and Windows Mobile, I am less concerned about the future of PalmOS. There are efforts to rescue him from his ashes and do reborn in the next-generation operating system to emerge, whether ALP, is another.
On the other hand, those who begin to develop Linux for ALP have nothing to fear, a platform that is free does not prevent the applications are developed for him to pay. There are hundreds of examples today of commercial software for Linux.
A greeting.
Yes, that Palm based Linux I have found a bishop move. Has been talking a lot of it, hopefully see something firm soon. I can assure you that we will continue using the Palm OS without a community become anachronistic, for example, very pitiful has become the community of users of HP calculators (I used to be one of them). And I second the opinion that both products will be paid as a free ALP (or on the platform that is imposed).
For what I read on your site and others, the Cobalt, as well as what would develop, and came with the nails of his own coffin. I agree with those who think we'll see not a finished product. Hey, and what that may appear around in freeware, like so many other products the level of trade is extinguished (the CASL, dictionaries noahpro.org, ...). Surely many of you already follow Mr. Anderson, MD, in bizarre experiments with him.
Examples of these exchange platform in the Nokia and Windows Mobile, I think are excellent ways to diversify the use of the Palm platform. Let us hope that efforts arose reflections of this nature but aimed at the Palm hardware, that is, we could run applications for Windows Mobile Palm, I do not know, maybe because you can. I do not lose sleep PPCs, but it would be nice to see what we can gather from that platform and take it to our preference.
This year I was surprised to discover that many of the best websites I found on Palm OS, are not directly related to the Palm brand, but of enthusiasts who have perpetuated and optimized its use. Yours is one of them. All you appreciate your effort.
