Simula your Palm with a Wacom graphics tablet

For those not familiar with these devices, a digitizer is a very popular peripheral for illustrators, as they can draw or trace with a pencil tip on a magnetic tablet connected to the computer. Allow a digital work easier, faster and convenient, being able to edit photos, videos and graphics with much greater precision, and sign documents, make drawings or edit pictures.

This is the aspect of a Wacom tablet

Graphic tablets are the most famous of the company Wacom. If you'd like to try one, now you can simply use your Palm. I do not think the outcome will satisfy the design professionals, but it is far less curious. To this end we need the free program PalmWac, which will make our Palm emulate a Wacom IV in both Windows and Linux in graphical mode (XFree) and even in text mode (LPM). The problem is that it only supports serial or infrared connection, you can not connect via USB.

The installation both Linux and Windows is very simple. The first is to load a module during the boot of XFree, and then when you connect the Palm appear in the system as a Wacom tablet. Windows is equally simple:

  • Download and install the program on our Palm in the usual way.
  • Bring down the serial port on the Hotsync Manager, so you do not create a conflict.
  • Download the drivers of a Wacom tablet. Version 4.6 appears to work correctly. We connect the Palm to a PC, launch PalmWac and enter the menu, "Preferences". Find compatibility "Win" of Windows. Then you can install the drivers on the PC. If all goes well, after some recognized as the Palm as a graphics tablet.
  • For 30 seconds errors appear in the PalmWac of Palm, is being synchronized. Then messages appear like "Comm: 2 0 ST", that indicate that it works correctly.

I was disappointed to see him run, because my Tungsten E2 connects via USB, and I do not have infrared receiver on the PC. However, with a simple USB to serial converter will work. And if not, is free software, so that is interested can download the code and make it work via USB or, better still, by bluetooth.

Testing the program exclusively on the Palm that I have found is very sensitive and has the appearance of working as a digitizer very competent. If you do any design work on the PC, give him a chance this program. You'll have a digitizer, though small, at zero cost.
