To run modern versions of the applications in an old Palm

The Palm most recent brings of factory improved versions of the Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Memos, in comparison with models of some years ago. The possessors of one more a older Palm will miss things like: to be able to point dates of birthday of the contacts, colors different for the categories from the events, or to write notes of until 32kb.

Then he does not have so that to resign itself, since it is possible to install these new versions in the Palm old. Although they are programmed to run on PalmOS 5, has verified itself that even works in one IIIc running Palm OS 4.1. The Favorite applications, You case out and Preferences seem to well also work in old versions of the operating system. Even Versamail, until its version 2.6, can work in PalmOS 4.

In order to secure these applications, we needed a Palm like Tungsten T3 or Tungsten E (or a simulator). More recent models as the T5 or Zire 72 can give some problem at the time of, for example, to send a contact via infrared. The reason is, simply, the lack in old apparatuses of some bookstores like the ones in charge to manage the basic image or the photos of the contacts. We also need a manager archives, like for example Filez.

We install Filez in the Palm and we chose files->Internal View and edit. We need the following archives:

  • Calender-PDat location archives (for example Calendar-PDat_deDE for a Palm that are used in German).
  • Contacts-PAdd location archives.
  • Memo location archives.
  • Tasks-PTod location archives.
  • In case of using a Zire72 or 31, we will need to copy first CategoryLib-catL location archives, or the Palm will be hung.

We select these archives we copied and them to card SD, we directly sent or them to the old Palm by infrared. If instead of a Palm we are using its simulator to obtain the files, the archives we will have to copy them to POSESlot1, that corresponds with the Card0 directory in the simulator. If Filez does not work well, we can use in its GentleMan place.

Now that we have installed the new applications, in the Palm they will appear the new version as much as the old man. So that the old women are hidden we needed to copy the following files:

  • DateBook location archives (for example It dates Book_deDE).
  • Address Book location archives.
  • MemoPad location archives.
  • All List location archives.

And finally, we needed to be able to do hotsync. If we have problems with the applications just installed, surely it must to that we are using a too old version of Palm Desktop, that does not understand the new file format. We need to lower the last version, available of gratuitous way.

With these steps, we will have our old Palm working with the new programs. This guide is based on these three posts of blog of Tam Hanna. In them there are many commentaries of readers with solutions to the problems that were arising.
