Running modern versions of the applications in a former Palm

Palm brings the latest factory improved versions of Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Memos, compared with models of a few years ago. The holders of a Palm oldest miss fewer things like power point birthdates of the contacts, colors for different categories of events, or write notes of up to 32kb.

Well, there was no reason to resign, as it is possible to install these new versions in the old Palm. Although scheduled to run on PalmOS 5, has been found to operate even in a Palm IIIc running OS 4.1. Applications Favorites, Files and Settings seem to work well on older versions of the operating system. Even Versamail up its version 2.6, can run on PalmOS 4.

To achieve these applications, we need as a Palm Tungsten T3 and Tungsten E (or a simulator). Newer models like the T5 or Zire 72 can be a problem at the time of, for example, send a contact via infrared. The reason is simply the lack of old equipment in some libraries as those responsible for managing the background image or photos of the contacts. We also need a file manager, such as Filez.

Filez installed on the Palm and choose View and edit files-> Internal. We need the following files:

  • Calendar-pdate + locale files (eg-PDat_deDE Calendar for Palm to be used in German).
  • Contacts-Padda + locale files.
  • Memos-PMem + locale files.
  • Tasks-PTod + locale files.
  • If you use a Zire72 or 31, need to copy the first-CategoryLib catla + locale files, or the Palm will crash.

We select and copy these files to the SD card, or sent directly to the former Palm infrared. If instead of using a Palm simulator to get your files, you must copy the files to POSESlot1, which corresponds to the directory Card0 in the simulator. If Filez does not work well, we can use in their place Gentleman.

Now that we have installed new applications, the Palm appear in both the new version as the old. In order to conceal the old need to copy the following files:

  • Datebook + locale files (eg Book_deDE Date).
  • Address Book + locale files.
  • MemoPad + locale files.
  • ToDo List + locale files.

And finally, we need to hotsync. If we have problems with newly installed applications, to be sure we're using an old version of Palm Desktop, which does not understand the new file format. We need to download the latest version, available free of charge.

With these steps, we will have our old Palm operating with the new programs. This guide is based on these three posts of the blog Tam Hanna. In them there were many comments from readers with solutions to problems that arose.
