Mahjong solitaire, a game with traditional flavor

The Mahjong solitaire, also known like Shanghai solitaire, is a game of emparejamiento for a player, who uses the pieces of the Mahjong, in the same way that the letter solitaires use letters of the deck. Therefore he is advisable not to confuse solitary Mahjong with Mahjong. The Mahong is a table game of Chinese origin, for four players, who exported themselves as of 1920 to the rest of the world, and particularly to the West. It is compound of 144 cards, called “roofing tiles”:

  • 36 roofing tiles of the wood of the Circles
  • 36 roofing tiles of the wood of the Bamboos
  • 36 roofing tiles of the wood of the Numbers (also called sometimes “characters”)
  • 16 Wind roofing tiles (This, South ones, the West and North)
  • 12 roofing tiles of Dragoons (red dragoon, white dragoon and green dragoon)
  • 4 roofing tiles of Flowers
  • 4 roofing tiles of Stations

Excepting the flowers and stations, that are not repeated, there are four copies of each card.

The Mahjong, not the solitaire, is a table game
The Mahjong (not the solitaire) is a table game

In traditional the Mahjong solitaire, these 144 pieces are placed in a disposition of four levels, with the faces upwards. A piece that can be moved towards the right or the left, without modifying the position of the others, says that it is exposed. The identical pairs of exhibited cards, are those that we can be eliminating of the board. The exception is the cards that represent flowers or stations of the year, since any pair of them is also valid. When eliminating pairs, we will be leaving exhibited other cards, which allows new emparejamientos us. The objective of the game is to retire all the pieces. The game finishes we have condeguido when it, or are not evener exposed. The configuration traditional, and more well-known, is the one of the dragoon, but other configurations exist in which the game has a level of different difficulty.

The pieces placed in disposition of the “dragoon”

The strategy to follow consists of trying not to at the outset eliminate all the obvious pairs, but to deal with that with each pair that we eliminate, other pieces are exposed. If we do not do it thus, surely we will lose the game prematurely, when leaving fundamental pieces covered by others. Other advice to finalize the solitaire successfully are the following:

  • We must consider that to the salary four equal pieces of each type, when eliminating a pair is another pair to find, reason why it will be necessary to choose suitably.
  • Considering the previous thing, if the four pieces of a type are available, we will have to eliminate them the sooner to exhibit all the other possible pieces.
  • With time we will take the sufficient skill like planning many movements after the present one, and thus choosing the option that agrees to us more.
  • Not we must FIAR us too much of suggestion that he gives us computer, since this one will be first that found, not more useful it.
  • Before putting to us to eliminate pairs, he is better to pay attention to what pieces it is more necessary to get to expose, continuing the game later.
  • In the case of having exhibited three pieces of a type, it is necessary to choose well that even to eliminate: that one that next leaves more pieces exhibited (and more important).
  • Like general rule, we will have to concentrate itself in eliminating the pairs that leave more pieces exhibited.

The Mahjong solitaire is created descendant of a called game “the turtle” that exists in China for centuries. The first version for computer of this solitary data of 1981 and was programmed for the system PLATE. The version that did to this famous game was the Shanghai game, of Activision, sent in 1986 for Macintosh. From there were many versions there: MSDOS, Windows, OS/2, Linux, Macintosh… and by all means PalmOS.

Among all the games of Mahjong solitaire that exist for PalmOS, I recommend to you both that they are gratuitous, since they have a great quality:

  • Freejong is very complete and full similarity to me of details. When we began a new game, we can choose between fifteen dispositions different from the pieces. It includes the necessary options like undoing and remaking, to give a track, to look for a pair us, or to remezclar the pieces (so that when we are without possible movements we pruned to continue). Graphically he is correct, with hi-res support and possibility of changing the basic image. In addition if we dragged stylus by the screen, it will be teaching an extension to us of the drawing of the card over which we happen, thus to see those that estan women who hides herself with mantel partially.
  • Freejong is seen 320x320 very well
Freejong is seen 320×320 very well

  • Takoshi on the other hand has been a little old fashioned. It only supports low resolution, and in my E2 the pieces are not seen. Nevertheless, it adds a new way of game, shisen-sho, in which pairs cannot be eliminated that cannot be united by like minimum three lines. In order to understand better what means, we can read the documentation that accompanies the game.

Really, a solitaire entertained enough, that personally knew a long time ago, but never had decided to me to try. Nevertheless, once the rules are learned, it surprises the addictive thing that are. You intention to you prove that it.
