Wake up your PC from the Palm through Wake on LAN

Wake on LAN is a networking standard that allows computers to boot a PC that was "asleep" so remote. This is accomplished by sending to the PC via the network, a "magic package" which is simply an ethernet frame with a particular format. PCs compatible with this technology have on your motherboard is a connector that communicates through a three-wire cable with the network card. Once placed this cable, only need to activate the option of Wake on LAN in the BIOS of the computer, in the section of power management.

Motherboards that bring the integrated network card, of course this does not even need cable. In addition, computers compatible with standard PCI 2.2, and with a network card is also compatible with this standard, does not need the cable, because the signal is transmitted directly through the PCI bus. It is easy to identify when the PC is ready to awaken to receive this plot: even when turned off, notice that the LEDs on the network card are still lit, since it remains turned on and connected to the network.

Once our PC is ready, we just need to send the magic packet to wake from another computer. There are many utilities that do this, with the Ether-wake for Linux, Magic Packet Sender for Windows, WakeUp for MacOS, or wakeonlan, multiplatform to be written in Java. But what interests us especially is that there are also programs for PalmOS, so that we can awaken our computer when we want, simply from our Palm access to the network:

  • PalmWOL WOL is a utility for PalmOS. As all, it requires that our Palm connect to the network, and we know the MAC address of the computer's network card. It is not free, but its price is low and we can test for 14 days.
  • PalmWOL es muy sencillo de manejar
    PalmWOL is easy to handle

  • JWakeMe is written in Java, so it can run on any mobile phone or PDA that you have installed a virtual machine for Java MIDP 1.0. We talked about how to do it at the Palm, when he left the web browser Opera Mini.
  • JWakeMe funciona en cualquier dispositivo MIDP 1.0
JWakeMe device works on any MIDP 1.0

Every day is more common to have a small home computer without the keyboard and monitor, making MP3 player, Media Center, file server, and so on. With the Wake on LAN, we can turn it on at the time that we want, without having to go to where it is placed. This combined with the possibility of controlling the media player from Palm, makes it a very powerful remote control, and with coverage in every room where wifi or bluetooth.
