Inciclopedia, parody of Wikipedia, now for Palm

Leo today gives us a pleasant surprise: The Inciclopedia Version in key humor of Wikipedia, has been converted to Plucker format, ready to carry on our Palm.

[...] There is also an alternative to the Wikipedia project called Frikipedia, which unfortunately was closed by SGAE for "defaming" according to the demand presented to them, now has emerged since the Inciclopedia redemption of the Articles of Frikipedia [. ..]

Now the good news recently chusquete, one of the compilers of Wikipedia for Palm has compiled the Inciclopedia and can be found in this Post

La definición que derivó en el cierre de la Frikipedia
The definition that resulted in the closure of the Frikipedia

The file weighs just 3.6 MB and contains sufficient definitions to avoid boring in a good season. We must take this document as it is, not entirely take seriously what it says, because it is not left with a puppet head.

Upon discovering this news, I was an idea came to mind: why is it that the Inciclopedia may be in Plucker format, but the Wikipedia Tomeraider was compiled using a proprietary format? It has emerged answer:

Some of you may ask yourselves why it has chosen the format TomeRaider 3 (let's call onwards TR3) for a free content such as Wikipedia, instead of using a format that is as free Plucker, or maybe a format known as Isil.

The advantages of TR3 in front of the other two listed can be summarized as: ability to work with large files, high compression ratio and extreme speed when they search.

Work with large files and compression

There is an alternative format to TR3 because of the size of Wikipedia.

Plucker, for example, does not allow file sizes approx. up to 200 Mb. In addition, due to the internal format of the data compression is not very efficient. Some examples of this:

  • Our colleague managed to download PaTx with iSiloX (not free) version in Spanish without pictures after several days connected to the Internet. The final file was 120 MB, which is more than double what was then occupied the same compilation in TR3 format (in those days, 50Mb).
  • SQL downloading the file containing only the text of Wikipedia in June 2005, was about 170 Mb, who joined the images to 260x260 was plus or minus 1.3 Gb. How could remain in the file Isil (not free) or Plucker? We do not know because both programs are not capable of handling these sizes. TR3 format in this version (that of September 2005, which contains more data) occupies about 225 Mb.
  • The English version without images Wikpedia occupied 737 Mb TR3 format. Do you know how much was the SQL file? More than 3.5 Gb!

Searches very fast

In addition there is another quality of TR3 that are not in any other program: absolutely all the words that exist in the database are indexed, so searches are fast.

I am not referring here to locate the entrance of a word in an index (TR3 that he does very well) but to find a specific word throughout the text. Take the test yourself: search for the word that happens to you in text-only version (127 MB) and search any word in any document (I stress this because it is important) in a 10 MB in Plucker format, and you'll see what I mean.

Note

Some of you have seen around a version of the English Wikipedia called encycloPlucker, which as its name suggests, is in Plucker format. However, the creator of this version is sold, that is, is not a free version even though the file format it is (Plucker format).

This is because while it has cost this person to generate the final files. And yes, I speak of "files end" because, as I said before, Plucker does not allow larger file sizes of 200 Mb which, coupled with the worst that has the compression format, which makes the files occupy a lot. That is why the author is going to distribute the DVD.
