The PDA of tungsten

To have a backup of our data always is important. And normally we do not realize this until it is too much behind schedule. Doing hotsync, we say daily, we maintain an endorsement of the content of our Palm in the PC, but all the archives in ram are not copied in the process. Perhaps on the other hand, sometimes we need to recover our data when we are far from our PC. And finally, he is better to have two backups in two different sites, instead of only one. For these three reasons, and some more, are a good idea to take advantage of our external memory card to keep an endorsement from the content our Palm.

Now that we have regained consciousness of its necessity, we must decide us by the suitable tool. Many programs of backup exist. For example, I am using during some time the Resco Backup, because I consider one of the best ones.

But your Palm is Tungsten T5, Tungsten E2, TX, LifeDrive (and although not it specifies in program, I believe that also is applicable to Treo 650), that is to say, if your Palm uses the new system of storage NVFS, whose problems (and solutions) were already analyzed previously in depth, has appeared a program that seems stowaway of the sky: NVBackup.

NVBackup is a program of backup, gratuitous, specifically designed to realise backups of devices with NVFS. In fact, it will not work in other models of Palm. The normal programs of backup had problems with the NVFS, and caused resets during their operation. The author of NVBackup, nevertheless, affirms that this program uses an alternative method to copy the archives, not documented although also used in a program of the famous Dimitry Griemberg, that avoids these resets.

Although their interface is not showiest, counts on the following characteristics:

• The unique one thought specifically for models with NVFS, and for that reason is, only available for them. In theory it will eliminate the problem of resets during the backup, and the necessity to do a soft or warm reset before executing itself, to unblock some files in memory.
• Compression of the data to save space in the expansion board. Gzip, the standard of free compression uses compression, used world-wide, which allows to accede to its content from other programs.
• Possibility of keeping the two last ones, three last ones, etc, backups.
• Complete or incrementales backups, that only copy the archives modified from the last copy, and so the process is much more fast.
• Possibility of reclaiming the files selectively, instead of to recover all the backup simultaneously.

We can select one by one the files to recover

• Programming of the daily backups, to the hour that we specify (for example while we slept).
• The program will extinguish the Palm when finishing, but also we have the option of resetear palm when finishing, something that I make all the nights to recover all the DbCache memory of my device, to have it in optimal conditions every day.
• Option to lower the brightness of the screen to the minimum to save battery, if our Palm is a TX (fodder that a T5 can also take advantage of this option).
• Finally, it is a gratuitous program, and it frees since its source code is accessible under a license BSD.

The configuration of the program is very simple

Really, small wonder that, if it fulfills yet what announces, is going to become an application for essential backup. In fact, this program is giving much that to speak, as much in English as in Spanish.
