How to be able to receive any type of file in the Palm
Some days ago, a reader did the following consultation to me: bluetooth wanted to transfer files from the moving body to the Palm being used, but after copying them, these did not appear in the Palm. All we will at some time be with this problem, since it is not an error, if not a decision of design in PalmOS.
When a file by bluetooth, or infrared is transferred, or by hotsync, to the Palm, this one analyzes its extension. In case of being well-known, a predetermined action will be realised: if he is .prc will settle in ram, if he is .mp3 and we have an installed suitable reproducer, is copied to card SD, if it is a .jpg will copy the directory of images. Up to here very useful, but what happens if the extension is not known for PalmOS, we put .zip or .dxf? since the file flock and is as if it had not been received. A possible solution is to use some of the explained methods, and to accede to the memory card like a massive storage device, that in the PC appears like a normal and current external unit. But this is not worth for bluetooth or infrared.
The solution consists of installing Getdeblu, a small gratuitous utility (and in Spanish) that allows us to define, for each file extension, to what directory of the memory card copying it we receive when it, and what it programs to associate with the same. Its use is very simple:
- We abrimos the program, and we pressed the button To add. In the dialogue picture that is abre, we wrote the extension that we want to form, for example zip (without point at the beginning).
- Now the program associates east direct file with itself. If we have some program in the PDA that knows abrir this type of files, we can associate it, simply choosing it of the drop-down list.
- Underneath, in Hotsync Destiny, we defined the directory where the file will be copied after receiving it. Also the directories can be modified where, by defect, the programs already installed copy their associate archives.
- And finally, in Application post reception, is defined what programs to initiate after receiving a file of this type.

Just like we have done with the extension of the file, also it can take control of types MIME, in case we want to define the associations this way (for unloaded files of Internet). And in the preferences of the program, we will find two useful options additional: we will be able to deactivate having to confirm the reception of a file (comfortable, but nothing recommendable if someday they begin to appear virus that propagates by bluetooth, as it already happens with the movable telephones), and most important, also we will be able to define in what directory of the memory card copying the received archives that we have still not associated. Thus never the case of losing a file because will occur it has an extension or type MIME about which we have not thought.
Before finishing, I want to warn the users of a Tungsten T3, of which there have been cases in which this program has caused hard reset of the Palm. So before proving it, you verify that you have a recent backup of your data, to avoid scares.
In summary, a program that we can install without it bothers due to its small size (in my E2 she was one of the first things that I installed), but that will save to us in more than an occasion, when a friend sends a file to us from his movable telephone, and this one is of a type nonrecognized by the Palm. It would not have to come from the beginning by defect integrated in PalmOS?

The machine glulx yes that could be carried easily to PalmOS. In fact it has version Windows and Linux already. But Superglús, to the being graphical surroundings, would be necessary to design it from zero to make a version for Palm.

Verda is said (and that they pardon those to me that are Palmeros 100% and not contemplasn another SO's)… When my TC is put “idiot very” and it does not accept X types of file, I almost prefer to use my Ipaq (PocketPC), I transfer the files that the desire gives me, them safe in the SD and said to SD the use in the TC…. We go, that complico me the life “not trying” rare inventions of formats “unknown” - llamalos a simple ZIP.
Sincerely I believe that THIS is one of the great ones you beat of Palm, the constant conversion of files. For this reason, in my knapsack the Palm and the PPC coexist my two “tiny beasts”….

They are different philosophies. Palm, in a too paternalistic exposition, does not allow that you install in the Palm archives that you do not have a program preparation abrir them. Thus it avoids bad uses on the part of the user or of other equipment.
