Recovering data from memory cards, CDs or hard drives, after a disaster

The program now recommended, although not specifically for Palm, it will be very useful for many users. Whether we talk about the murderous SD cards, in addition to being able to spoil our Palm, at any time may no longer be usable, and lose the information they contain. But not only memory cards die with our data inside. The same could happen with CD-ROMs, hard drives, etc.. And the worst thing is that usually happens at the worst possible moment. But that does not panic, yet there is a solution, so do not let a lost our data so soon.

PhotoRec is a program specifically designed to recover anything that can be of these disasters. In his page explaining that it can be retrieved photographs or other data from CompactFlash cards, Memory Stick, SecureDigital, SmartMedia, Microdrive, MMC, USB external drives, and even CDs and hard drives. In fact, supports filesystems FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3, bringing the compatibility is great, and can operate even when they are heavily damaged. There are versions for DOS/Win9x, 4/2000/XP/2003 Windows NT, Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Sun Solaris and Mac OS X. And to curl the border, is free software and free.

The trick is that normally in these memory cards information is not fragmented (the photos for example, are taken out one after another, and then erased all at once). So what PhotoRec ago, is access to the partition of data directly, and seek the headwaters of file types you know. When it finds one, knows that there begins a file, and starts to tip over. We should not worry about it, because it never changed the unit he is reading. All files are saved in generating the directory from being implemented.

And speaking of finding cabezeras file, we must comment that the amount of file types other than acknowledging is huge: all formats graphics and audio and video imaginable, as well as compressed files, documents office suite (Office, OpenOffice, StarOffice ...), executables, scripts, HTML source code files ... namely, that applies to more than enough to recover photos.

And if it were not enough, he accompanies another program called TestDisk, used to recover our data but when we accidentally erased or damaged partition table of our hard drive, or as we turned off bootable partition or floppy disk that what it was, and so on.

And it really is going to help us walk with partitions, you just have to look at the formats supported:

  • BeFS (BeOS)
  • BSD disklabel (FreeBSD / OpenBSD / NetBSD)
  • CramFS, Compressed File System
  • DOS / Windows FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32
  • HFS and HFS , Hierarchical File System
  • JFS, IBM's Journal File System
  • Linux Ext2 and Ext3
  • Linux Raid
    • RAID 1: mirroring
    • RAID 4: striped array with parity device
    • RAID 5: striped array with information distributed parity
    • RAID 6: striped array with dual redundancy distributed information
  • Linux Swap (versions 1 and 2)
  • LVM and LVM2 (Linux Logical Volume Manager)
  • Mac partition map
  • Novell Storage Services (NSS)
  • NTFS (Windows NT/2K/XP/2003)
  • ReiserFS 3.5, 3.6 and 4
  • Sun Solaris i386 disklabel
  • Unix and UFS2 UFS File System (Sun / BSD /...)
  • XFS, SGI's Journal File System

The program can be downloaded from this page, and can also be found online documentation. A utility as it rained from the sky for a thousand situations where it can make the difference between losing or not all our valuable data.
