Duke Nukem 3D for Handspans

No, you have not read badly. Taking advantage of to the maximum the power a Palm, 3D can be gotten to execute in her Duke Nukem, the game of action in first person who all those that was in favor of the world of the computers in year 1996 will know. For that it is not the case, he will be enough to say that he was one of the first games in recreating the three dimensions (although already Doom existed and still before Wolfenstein 3D, to mention some), although only partially, since the personages, enemies and objects, continued being sprites 2D.

Duke Nukem 3D uses an own graphical motor, created by Ken Silverman for the company 3D Realms, call build. The source code of build was released the 20 of June of 2000, and from him, many have been created ports that allow to natively play the Duke Nukem 3D in Linux, or to improve the graphical quality and of sound, being taken advantage of the present equipment. One of these ports is the created one by JonoF, that takes advantage of the accelerating graphical cards that support OpenGL. And indeed in this page, we can find a video where 3D for Handspans can be seen working port of Duke Nukem, of which I am going to speak next. Jono was so amiable to raise the video YouTube, so that it could include it in post.

This it is an example of the advantages of free software: from port that Jono did of the original one, and when being its code also available freely, Henk Jonas modified it to create this port of Duke Nukem 3D for Handspans. The installation is simple:

  • We unloaded this file, and we decompressed it. In him there are two archives: duke3d.prc, is the feasible one, and it settles normally, in ram of the Palm or, if we want to save space, in the folder to /Palm/Launcher of card SD.
  • The other file is duke3d.zdk, and to install we will need it to accede to card SD. We go to /Palm/Programs and we created a new called directory Duke3D. In him we copied this one file, so that it stays as /Palm/Programs/Duke3D/duke3d.zdk.
  • Now we needed to copy the data files of an installation of Duke Nukem 3D for PC. We only needed the archives con, rts and grp. We copied them to the same Duke3D folder of the SD, where we copied the other file before.
  • In addition to the original game, also we can do the same with expansions, or additional maps.
  • Unfortunately, this program requires more ram memory than the 2 or 4Mb of heap that usually brings the Palm. For that reason, it will be essential to use program UDMH of Dimitry, that simulates more memory for the programs, reconverting storage memory. Altogether they are necessary 7Mb of heap, so those that lack, are those that we will have to leave free so that UDMH can assign them.

Port allows to change the resolution, to take advantage of the acceleration hardware the Zodiac, has support for sound and music (this last one installing timidity), support for tricks (the console is opened pressing the center of the screen), possibility of controlling the Vista with stylus, support for the keyboard in the Treo, and until multiplayer game through bluetooth!

I have proven to play in my E2 and, although it is not the Palm with the most powerful processor, the game moved at an ideal speed to play, reason why not even it was necessary to do overclocking. 3D is really surprising to see a game like Duke Nukem working in a Palm, but it is it still more to see how it is possible perfectly to be controlled with the bellboys and pad directional. It is more, we will be able to assign other actions like moving by the inventory, seeing map or to open doors, to certain zones of the screen, with which the possibilities increase much.

Really, everything an example of which the hardware of a Palm can do more than what it seems. And Duke Nukem 3D is not the only game of its style that we can prove, but that we will see it throughout the next days.
