Quake for PalmOS

Having seen how to run Duke Nukem 3D and Doom in our palm, lack of talk about another great game of first-person shooter. Not content with the success with Doom, Id Software turned to leave the world with his mouth open after the presentation of Quake. Now the objects, enemies and characters were first 3D models, replacing the classic sprites, in the same way that 2D height scenarios finally became true three-dimensional landscapes. The lighting became dynamic with moving objects that were sources of light or color, leaving behind lighting sectors used to date.

Such were the changes brought this game with him, and later, GLQuake utilizing OpenGL finally began the revolution in 3D accelerator cards. In fact, almost all the fighting genre, from HalfLife to Soldier of Fortune, descend from this engine, as shown in this figure.

The game's story follows the usual format for first-person shooters id Software: Portals to some realities of evil beings have been opened, and you're the only one who can travel through them to close. In the specific case of Quake, the other reality is inspired by many influences, highlighting the novels of HP Lovecraft (the chief end of the game is the very Shub-Niggurath). As in the case of Doom, Quake also has two expansions, given their quality and length rather be regarded as complete sets: Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity. Know how this game came as heterogeneous, thanks to Wikipedia:

Quake was chosen as the instrument that id Software was working shortly after the release of Doom 2. The first reports described Quake as a Thor-like character carrying a giant hammer and was able to overthrow the people throwing the hammer (with real-time inverse kinematics). The first screenshots showed medieval environments and dragons. The plan was that the game had more elements of RPG. But work on the engine was very slow, since Carmack not only developed a fully 3D engine, but a system for TCP / IP (Carmack later said he should have developed two separate projects for each of these things) . Eventually the game was far from his original intentions, and had a game system similar to Doom 2. Adored by the gaming community, soon dethroned previous FPS titles and revolutionized the way multiplayer game that were developed.

The source code of the Quake engine and QuakeWorld were licensed through the GPL in 1999. As we know, being a popular game, it automatically triggered the creation of projects that improved the original game, or did it run on other platforms. It is curious for example, playing the original Quake using the more advanced effects of current graphics cards and high resolution textures created by enthusiasts of the game, the project Tenebrae.

Quake was ported to many platforms. And of course, one of these platforms was PalmOS. Lemmings is a port that allows us to play on our PDA to Quake. Its installation does not differ from that for Doom and Duke3D:

  • Install the. Prc normally in our palm, without distinction in main memory or SD card.
  • Create the / Palm / Programs / Lemmings in the SD card and copy the file there. ZDK.
  • And finally copy the necessary files from an installation of the original Quake. Here we have to look a little detail: we must create the directory id1, and within it copy files pak0.pak and pak1.pak, as they are in the game directory. Ie they would be as / Palm/Programs/ZQuake/id1/pak0.pak. If we copy these files directly in the folder Lemmings will not work. Similarly, for the expansions, we will create a directory or hipnotic rogue, according to which the case, thus imitating the structure of the original game.

Like the port of Doom, Lemmings game supports both bluetooth network and through Internet (TCP / IP). Really not much different from the other ports, except for one thing: you need a huge amount of heap memory. It is a more advanced game and this is reflected in the requirements. We will need to install UDMH and yet we may not start. If that were our case, we can try disabling the sound, and try to have enough free RAM for UDMH can use it.

Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake ... all running on our little Palm. The power of these devices is greater than one might think at first. Good luck with the installation and enjoy.
