Listen to radio online at the Palm

One of the surprises that has brought us the Internet is the ability to listen to thousands of radio stations around the world, free and easily via the network. Any style of music that we might be interested, from jazz to classical, from rock to progressive, is available 24 hours a day to accompany us wherever we have Internet connection.

One of the main promoters of this world of Internet radio is by Nullsoft (creators of the well-known player Winamp), and its technology for streaming audio called Shoutcast, using MP3 encoding and HTTP protocol for transmitting radio and the internet. Unlike many sites that offer only Internet radio, Shoutcast promotes the creation by users of their new servers radio thanks to its free software for servers.

The catalog contains about 9,000 Shoutcast server for Internet radio, classified by gender, by the bandwidth of their transmissions and the number of users who can listen and serve at once.

With this software, anyone can create and tailor a server to its own needs. For example, only radios that are used in local area networks and bandwidth consumed internally but not Internet access, can be used to achieve savings in the bill for corporate communications and various agencies. The audio format used for streaming Shoutcast can be read by multiple client programs, including the players Nullsoft Winamp, Apple iTunes and Windows Media Player (versions 9 and 10 only).

But what most concerns us is that there is another program that supports this technology for streaming (from version 3.0): PocketTunes, one of the best audio players for PalmOS. Listening to a radio station online from our Palm is as simple as navigating to the page where it lists all available channels, select and download a file from the playlist concerned (with extension PLS). At that time PocketTunes will recognize it as the address of a transmission of streamed audio and start playing it.

Furthermore, if we have the option of playing in the background, we start to hear the sound automatically without leaving the Web browser, and can control the volume and playback using the shortcuts that we have configured in PocketTunes.

Shoutcast supports various qualities of audio formats and encoding. PocketTunes is only compatible with MP3 streaming, so the channels that use aacPlus not serve us for the Palm (at least with this program). The audio quality is also determining whether we have a team less potent. It should be borne in mind that the Palm is that, while decodes the audio, manage the transmission of data, it needs more CPU power. For example, we read in TamsPalm how using a Tungsten T3, with high grades may be emptied buffer player often, so that the reproduction has to stop a moment to fill it again, and then continue. However, I tried to listen to a stereo channel of 128kbps in my Tungsten E2 (which does not incorporate the faster processor inside the Palm), and even using bluetooth (much slower than a wifi connection) playback was flawless.

So as we see, playing in a Palm broadcasting internet streaming is a reality, which combined with wireless connectivity, we can always have with us a player capable of receiving such transmissions, to take advantage of a different way to the usual areas of wireless coverage we've discovered.
