Maintaining weblog from the Palm

Before speaking envelope how to bloguear from the Palm, the best thing will be than first we know of what we are speaking. What is weblog/binnacle/blog? We see what the Wikipedia says to us:

Weblog, also known like blog or binnacle (listed of events), is a Web site periodically updated that chronological compiles texts or articles of one or several authors where most recent it appears first, with a thematic use or in particular, always conserving the author the freedom to leave published what creates pertinent. Weblogs of type personal, journalistic, enterprise or corporative, technological, educative, etc. exist.

Although surely some will have remained worse than before. I like plus this definition that we can read in Minid.net:

Weblog is a page Web of easy update. Yes, they have that characteristic that allows them to the authors of weblogs to publish content (texts, images and other archives) with pushing a single button. Anyone can publish weblog thanks to the amount of tools that there are in the Web to do it. This tool is known, generally, with the name of manager of contents or Content Management System (CMS). With this tool you can update your page from any computer with access to Internet.

Weblogs has a very clear characteristic, it defines that them of the rest of sites, and is the chronology. This chronology gives to the aspect of a personal newspaper or binnacle them of annotations. Beginning by the last subject written following until the beginnings, equipping to weblog of an order clear and logical to look for subjects. This allows to know that people are writing in certain date.

Whenever an author writes an entrance (or “post” [word in English used] also) the manager of contents updates the page of beginning with the mentioned structure. In addition, each entrance has the possibility of adding commentaries, trackbacks and other functionalities that the program of management of contents allows. Each entrance generally has a structure: Date, Title, Body of the entrance, permanent Connection, Category, Commentaries, Trackbacks.

One more a track: this page that you are reading is blog.

The phenomenon of blogging takes to every day more height. Technorati, a finder specialized in weblogs, reviews 51,3 million of blogs daily, and duplicate is said that to the blogosfera (biosphere of blogs) every five years. Certainly we do not have to take this data like definitive: much people have known blogs recently and for that reason they also want to begin one. Then they enter Blogger or Live Spaces, and put one or two posts, and after that they become bored. The result is that a great percentage of these blogs already has been forgotten for enough a long time. But those that do not undergo this destiny, continue growing, offering contained interesting, from most traditional like personal newspapers or analyses on the news, to others with thematic that never we had imagined.

This of blogging is very well, but what has to do with our Palm? Since we can turn it into our personal notebook, that accompanies the day throughout to us, to be pointing the ideas and experiences that we want to share with our readers. With a connection to Internet, or by movable telephone, wifi, or even in each hotsync, we will be able to add new posts to ours blog, to publish the old ones, etc, simply with our Palm. We see whereupon options we counted:

  • In order to maintain fotoblog, that is to say, blog in which we published the inatantáneas taken with our camera (same the one of the PDA), already we spoke recently of SplashBlog.
  • The most recent incorporation (thanks Gonzalo) has been the one of Typepad, that has sent an application for PalmOS, Windows Mobile and Symbian Series 60 that allow to write ours posts in the Palm and to send them through the connection of data (wifi, moving body with bluetooth, etc).

  • PlogIt is also gratuitous, with the advantage added of being free software, although he is simpler and it has not been updated from 2004. It supports Blogger, MetaWeblog, and Movable Type. It allows to keep rough drafts in the Palm, and to our rejoicing, it has version in Castilian.

  • Vagablog was a commercial program, but his author decided to release it free of charge to the public, source code including. He can unload posts existing to publish them and to return to raise them, to raise images, or to correct the spelling. He unfortunately only is in English. A documentation page exists where it is explained step by step how to form it for each supported service. It supports the API of Blogger, and has been tried successfully in WordPress and MoveableType. There are instructions to also use it in JournalSpace, TypePad and LiveJournal.

  • Another more gratuitous option to maintain ours blog is U*Blog. The supported API are Blogger, metaWeblog and MoveableType, with support to include images in post. It has a publishing integrated HTML, possibility of previsualizing the images before sending them, and of keeping entrances in the Palm (rough drafts). We can also unload it of Freewarepalm.

  • And by all means, the option exists to send posts by email, since many CMS support this functionality. We will even be able to add images within the email, that will be published automatically. A program that helps us to keep ours posts, to send them via hotsync is BlogMail.
  • In order to know all the possibilities, we will also comment some commercial programs. For example mo: Blog, that costs 12.5€. It also supports the shipment of files if ours blog accepts shipments by FTP, which will allow to even include photos taken from the camera or fragments from audio which we have recorded with the microphone. It supports the API of Blogger, MetaWeblog and MoveableType, which means that we will be able to raise posts ours blogs if Blogger, WordPress, MoveableType, Typepad and any other service use that one of those API uses. The project follows developing, and new very interesting functionalities (some already implemented in the versions are promised “beta” of mo: Blog 3,0).
  • Another compatible commercial program with great amount of services of blogging is HBlogger ($14.95): Live Journal, Blogger, Movable Type, UJournal, DeadJournal, Blurty, NeedlessPanic, Plogs, Caleida, GreatestJournal, TypePad and Weblogs. Also we can send images, keep rough drafts, maintain several simultaneously blogs, use tags HTML, assign categories, close commentaries, etc.

As we see, there is variety enough, which proves the existing interest in being able to exclusively maintain blog with a movable telephone or a PDA. If you must interesting things that count, animaros to create your own blog. Many gratuitous services exist to begin, and from you decide there until where you want to arrive.
