Geographical searches from your Palm with Google Maps

The well-known geographic search services Google Maps is finally available for computers with PalmOS operating system. Of course, like its PC version, we will need to have an Internet connection to use it. I've done tests on my Tungsten E2 connecting to the internet via bluetooth using my PC and the truth is that the program is going smoothly. Before you install it, we can see a tour where we explain the functions of the program, which are as follows:

  • Geographical searches through a variety of information: name of the city, street, ZIP code, geographic coordinates, and so on. A trick: to find something in a country other than United States, adding to the end a comma and the symbol of the country. For example, to find Madrid in Spain, look for "madrid is."
  • Given two points, the program can calculate the shortest route between the two, showing in detail the journey in the style of the programs for car navigation.

Detalle de la ruta entre dos ciudades
Details of the route between two cities

  • As in the full version, we can choose between physical maps (satellite photos), or street maps with the names of streets and squares.
  • Lets zoom away and we approach with great fluency, and the Palm browser to five addresses, it can be used to move around the map without using the touch screen (very useful for the Treo, so no need to make the stylus).
  • Of course, as his older brother, allows you to find all kinds of services: pharmacies, hotels, restaurants, pizzerias ... everything that we can do when we lack a city for the first time.
  • Buscando una pizzería en los alrededores
Looking for a pizzeria in the vicinity

  • Supposedly also provides traffic information in real time, but appears to be available only for the United States.
  • El estado del tráfico en Nueva York
The state of traffic in New York

  • The maps downloaded are temporarily kept in cache, so there is no need to download them again if we simply go back to view the map. Also shown at all times the amount of data downloaded in the session, to control spending.

Although there was already a version of Google Maps on Java, unfortunately it was not compatible with the Palm PDA. There is an ill wind that blows nobody any good, and we can now enjoy Google Maps as a native application for PalmOS. Once we verify the compatibility of Google Maps with our team, we just have to download and install the software on the Palm. Although it says it is the version for the Treo, it really is compatible with all computers with PalmOS 5.

We can stay abreast of new developments emerging from this program through this page, and doubts consult with others in this discussion group. In forums PDAExpertos we can find the experiences of users, and in the portal have done an extensive analysis with screen shots of all the options.

Without doubt, a truly useful application for our mobile devices, which at the same time gives a new utility to connect to the internet in these devices and does shake our portfolios. When is a flat fee for affordable data?
