How to connect your Palm to the Internet through a Bluetooth and GPRS mobile

These instructions were kindly provided by Guillermo in a comment to post on how to connect to the internet via bluetooth Palm (via a PC). Guillermo's how he explains now, but by connecting to a bluetooth mobile phone, and using it as GPRS modem.

The standard GPRS Service (general packet radio) allows data transfer rates much higher than the previous standard GSM (Global System for Mobile communications). To use this service, contact your mobile network operator to find out if your phone is compatible with GPRS, and then subscribe to a GPRS account. Then, just change the configuration of the Palm handheld to adapt it to the operator that provides mobile network.

Note: The Bluetooth connectivity is not available for Palm handhelds with Palm OS 3.x. If you have a device with these characteristics, and want to connect to a GPRS service, use an infrared connection to a compatible mobile phone.

The Palm handheld must be configured properly to access the Internet using the parameters provided by the GPRS mobile network operator in question. Each operator provides its own specific configuration, without direct support palmOne.

Note: GPRS mode, the Palm handheld does not connect to an ISP, but requests an IP address to the GPRS mobile network operator.

Requirements of mobile phone

  • A GPRS compatible phone with Bluetooth radio technology. (Refer to the manual of your mobile phone).
  • A SIM card ready for GPRS. (Contact your mobile network operator to activate the service.)
  • Details of the mobile network operator.

Information to be specified during the setup procedure of "Connection" and "Red"

  • Access point name (APN): The format of the APN often-style "operador.web" in the case of Internet access, or "operador.wap" in the case of WAP access. Each service has its own rank in the network. Normally, the Internet APN is the number 1.
  • Domain name server (DNS): DNS1 and DNS2 - if they are not provided, these parameters can be dynamic.
  • Username and password: If you are not provided, you can use any word. Normally, this does not affect the connection at all.
  • Number of GPRS connection: For example, * 99 #.

By chance I found another article, albeit in English, explaining how to connect to the Internet using a Tungsten T2 a Nokia 6820. I hope that the two can reach a successful conclusion, in not having a phone with Bluetooth I could not prove it.
