The Palm as a tool of the hacker (VII): telephony and phreaking

We continue with this series of articles on the Palm as hacking tools, focusing on this case in the telephony and Phreaking.

Phreaking is a term coined to describe the subculture computing the activity of those individuals that guide their education and leisure to learning and understanding of how various types of telephones, telecommunications technologies, operating telephone companies, systems that comprise a telephone network and finally, electronics applied to telephone systems.

The goal of phreakers is usually overcome intellectual challenges of increasing complexity reacted with security incidents or failures in telephone systems to enable them to obtain privileges not available legally.

The term "Phreak" is one of the words phone (phone in English) and freak (freak in English). Also refers to the use of various audio frequencies to manipulate a phone system, since the word phreak is pronounced similarly to frequency (frequencies).

The phreak is a discipline closely related to conventional hacking. Auque is often considered and categorized as a specific type of computer hacking: hacking phone oriented, and closely associated with electronics, phreaking is actually the germ of hacking the phone system since it predates the spread of information technology to popular level, hacking arose from contact between phreaks with the first personal computer systems and communications networks.

There are many tools and phone phreaking in general for our Palm:

  • DigiDialer dialer is a DTMF (tone dialing) for our palm. We just have to bring the Palm to a telephone, and through the speaker deliver the tones necessary to dial the number you want. This saves us having to type the number, not even remember. The program lets you import phone numbers from the Contacts list on the Palm.

  • Similar to above, DTMF DA is a Desktop Accessory to generate DTMF tones for telephone calls.
  • War dialing or wardialing is a method of automatically scanning telephone numbers using a modem, usually calling every number in a local area to find out what computers or fax machines are available. Then you try to access them by guessing passwords. The name of this technique refers to the 1983 movie War Games where the hero used his computer for every phone call from Sunnyvale, California, looking for other computers. There is a program for PalmOS, TBA, if we serve our Palm is connected to a modem. For other systems there are many programs wardialing. For PC there is the famous show THC-Scan, which I found a video tutorial.
  • Spoofing, in terms of network security, refers to the use of phishing techniques, usually with malicious use or research. Spoof SMS send SMS messages by modifying the sender's phone number, making it appear that the message has been sent from this other number.

  • A Red Box is a device that simulates the coin has been inserted into a payphone, emitting certain sounds that the phone plays. RedPalm + + is a Canadian Red Box generates tones of currencies "quarter", "dime" and "nickel". This application also requires installing CBASP, an interpreter of BASIC. The source code is really very simple.
  • Minutes Plus is a program for mobile Kyocera and Treo to control spending about phone, and get interesting usage statistics.

  • Smorse (Simple morse code sender) sends morse code through the speaker on the Palm to 1-80 words per minute. A higher speed is not possible because of limited resolution of 10 milliseconds internal speaker.
  • As a curiosity, but not connected with the phone (at least traditional) RJ45 is a small program for Palm that shows ways to end a network cable when you're going to crimp: direct (host-to-hub) and cross (host to host ).

A whole world of phreaking, and as always, a removable world to our Palm. In the next post we will see the final episode of this series of posts dedicated to how to use the Palm as a hacking tool.
