The Palm as a tool of the hacker (and VIII): security and encryption
To end this series of posts dedicated to the use of our Palm as hacking tool, we will see some security tools for protecting both the computer as the data it contains, for possible attacks.
- CryptoPad is a replacement for the Notes application that comes default on PalmOS. Adds encryption Blowfish to the notes, thus preventing anyone from accessing the Palm can read the. The program also has a plug for the PC, which edit the notes saved will be easier.

Cryptopad encryption adds to our Notes
- CCrypt also allows us to encrypt text, in this case using the algorithm IDEA. The cipher text is copied to the clipboard, from where you can paste into a letter or document you want. To decipher it, we simply copy the text to the clipboard from one program, and CCrypt decrypt it.
- If we want to maintain insurance or a series of files in our Palm, nothing better than to create an encrypted virtual drive with the program CryptDrive, of which we speak on another occasion.
- GridLock controls access to the Palm via a 5x5 grid of boxes, which replaces the password field. Instead of a keyword, now it will be necessary to know the picture that we have chosen to unlock the device. This method makes it faster access to authorized typing a word every time you turn on the Palm.

Gridlock replaces the password with a drawing in a grid
- Craddle Robber fails to protect our data, but the Palm to complete. His goal is that no one steals while we let the loading on the base, if someone disconnected the Palm of the base while being charged, after a few seconds begin to sound an alarm and all buttons will be blocked until it is entered correctly a password to unlock or replace the Palm at the base. If the password is not entered, will continue playing until the battery runs out. In addition, the hard and soft reset are blocked while the alarm is sounding.
- As we have seen on many occasions, the security of our systems depends entirely on choosing a good password. I refer to a previous post where we have seen how our Palm could help us choose good passwords, and also to recall them in a safe manner. To increase options, we also recommend testing ALP (Account Login Password), which has a complement to the PC like keyring.

Keyring is a complete password manager
- However, the most secure method to protect our PDA is undoubtedly Thumb Scan, a program that recognizes the fingerprint on the touch screen, allowing access only to its owner. The only problem is that ... is a joke, but it is well to impress friends.

Wow that excellent series of posts! I charm the application of the fingerprint did not work for me ... but it does not recognize my fingerprint jejejeje
Soon posteare these excellent entries in my blog. Greetings.
MrAnderson thank you very much. I am delighted that we've found of interest.
I will continue looking to see if there is a real program of fingerprint recognition.
Ajajaja, which cool the implementation of the footprint, you stay with the whole world!
The me most is the GridLock liked, I'm going to have to try it ...
As always, another excellent post, Mark, without wishing to make a buck, this series of them are enjoying a lot to me.
Thank you!
A saludote!
Well, thank you very much Iban, was afraid of so many days bored with the same subject, I am delighted that it has not been well
Those who are bored have to tell me too, or did not know what ever
As a garment must be said of an item they want to read here
Thumb Scan this application is great and more serious if it really worked, and the use Gridlock already some time ago with good resulatados but the application was that he did not know Robber Craddle and that is that I am happy because when I load my LD I leave the job with more fear than by desire that which they do not return to see in an oversight jejeje
Marcos, because what I let you ask my opinion particular: The series was very good, and in some post rescataste some jewelry that he had never seen in all my months of move and test programs, but also note that in reality the amount of software it exists as a "hacker tool" for the palm is not very abundant, and had to hand Take some "padding", or programs to mention that, beyond that are useful or not, they were not going too much with the subject matter itself. Anyway it was a wonderful collection, worthy to point favorites in anyone who has a palm, although I personally I am very disappointed with Palm and I spent the dark side. >:)
The "dark side" is becoming to the market by leaps and bounds, while that from Palm and just renewing the Treo range, and still have the equivalent with Windows Mobile, on the other companies are coming true wonders phone + pda + bluetooth + wifi + gps-based WM.
It is a pity because I still think that on a daily basis is more productive PalmOS to Windows Mobile. I still innocently waiting for the arrival of ALP or whatever it will take to renew PalmOS, but the truth is being delayed too much, and I fear for the success of the new operating system.
Regard to the application of "padding", rather than lack of ideas what happened is that I found interesting applications that would not be able to put in another post just for them, and I was left without mentioning penalty, so I took advantage. I do not know how is the market for similar applications for Windows Mobile, but I think the PalmOS is quite completito. Only fear that abandoning the platform and applications are every day more and more old for lack of updates.
I'm with you, Mark, also still waiting for ALP as Palm put the batteries with new devices. And not just talking about smartphones, which would cost them little back to PDAs, the truth. Sure there are many people who are happy with your cellphone and just want a PDA.
Of course there are wonders with WM, but the day to day with these devices "Windows" eventually convince you that is not the most optimal (crash Debora battery, lack of certain utilities ...).
We can not want everything in one device, each of them is what it is. We can not want to do everything and that the battery lasts much and cost little. I think that is impossible, in PalmOS, and Linux in WM.
Hopefully ALP can really use these "old" and PalmOS programs that eventually everyone will be able to easily migrate to the new platform.
If not, what we are clear ...
