Access presents mini ALP, Palm and Microsoft are still in their world
On Thursday 23, Access released its Linux-based operating SITEMA ALP, with plenty of documentation for developers to begin porting their programs. Operating system is a good, nice and cheap, perfect competitor models currently exist, and with great projection. But is not that what we will treat this article.

Access ALP, an operating system up to competition
We all thought that ALP would be the successor of PalmOS, but it has been that Palm is not branded by ALP. Here's the translation of the statement that Palm sent CrunchGear the news page, where you were glad that ALP was supported by Palm, having extensive experience in the market for mobile devices:
I know you said abiertamiente never be the new Palm operating system, but to make things clear, the new Access OS is not the same as we are developing ourselves. The development of our operating system is taking place internally, and we hope to present products based on this operating system in the first half of 2009.
It's something we already knew. Access is eventually landed rights to Garnet OS, the operating system formerly known as PalmOS, ie they have installed all pre Palm Windows Mobile. He did not for use in any new equipment itself but to embed it on your new OS ALP, through an abstraction layer, so that ALP could also run native Linux programs, all existing programs for PalmOS.
What does this mean? That Access is creating an entirely new operating system, but when it hits the market, will have available the largest catalog of existing smartphone software: the PalmOS. This allows you to be, first, with all Palm users who love their operating system and now finally can keep him. And on the other, eliminates the initial time period in which they have to convince developers to make the first programs to its operating system.

Haier Super Smart Phone N60, the first smartphone with ALP Mini
But look beyond to see how Access does have vision. We read in this other article from CrunchGear interesting truth: the mobile market is a typical distribution 85-10-5, ie 85% of basic phones, 10% smartphones, and 5% other (walkie-talkies and other niche solutions).
Access has made its move presenting both ALP 3.0, with all the functionality that a smartphone should have, as well as ALP Mini is a lightweight version, to run on low-cost mobile ... that "little" 85% of the global mobile market (in addition to in cars, home electronics equipment ... in short, the large consumer market).

Access ALP Mini is much wider than mid-range phones and low
Like Nokia, which has its Symbian for high end phones, but also for the mass NokiaOS of phones, which uses normalità most people, ALP at its best at this very lucrative market. Just look at Palm and see that the phone that they are selling, by far, is the Treo Centro, Palm OS and a lower price than their brothers. On one side are showing the performance of the handset market "normal" and the other are paving the way to Access the PalmOS becoming popular among the mass of users, so that when landing with the ALP ALP mini people already know the PalmOS platform .
The market for smartphones type iPhone "is saturated: all HTC Touch, Samsung Omnia, Apple's own iPhone, Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, the new HP ... now there is room for more. However, the other 85% of the market does not yet know what the push email, a good quality videos, mail in the mobile, the "messenger", a decent schedule, decent games, a decent music player, a decent web browser ... the company that gets to move this technology to the great mass of consumers will be infinitely powerful, as did IBM know bring mainframe technology to consumer PCs, automotive, or Ford being the great majority with Ford-T ...
Let's see what the future holds in this regard:
- Let's start with Palm: What will run on the Linux-based operating system that Palm appears as next year?
Nothing, starting from scratch.[Edited: Jesus reminds me that Palm Lake also has rights to use Garnet, which does not preclude the emergence of new computers running PalmOS Palm natively or in emulation. Thanks for the clarification! ] Do you have possibility to enter the market 85% cheaper handsets? No, the Center was a move in that direction but is no longer PalmOS them[Edited: fixed for the same reason. PalmOS Will once again the goose that lays golden eggs for Palm? ]. Please give a good blow, will definitely go bankrupt. Think the Treo Pro: Microsoft operating system, hardware and "HTC will make a competition to Microsoft and HTC? I do not want to start talking about products thrown away just before going into production, such as Cobalt OS, or the Foleo ...

Cobalt and destroyed the credibility Foleo Palm
- Microsoft does not plan to get into the equipment manufacturing market. No wonder. For example HTC has no discretion in this regard. They make the Google computers, and Palm, as well as their own. Apple and its iPhone also put the bar rather high. On the software can you get into this market for cheap phones? Much has to improve, something that is less than 400MHz and 128 MB of RAM starting to look slow. Windows Mobile 6.1 is faster than the 5, but only a small percentage. It is not enough. They have to get a Windows Mobile Lite, and would not surprise me to see the medium term, but not in 2009 ... if they are not even able to get Windows Mobile 7 in 2009. Not to mention licensing. Android is free, Symbian also ...
- All other manufacturers that have chosen Windows Mobile: Samsung, Sony Ericsson ... are limited by Microsoft to enter that market for cheaper smartphones. Or choose another option or not enter there. And we return to licenses why pay if the competition is free?
- Google has been more ready, he took a cell phone from HTC (with hardware that has guaranteed quality) and has put a Linux and a Java machine developed by themselves. It is tied hand and foot waiting to see what is Microsoft doing to slim Windows Mobile. Although his team is not very low power, it seems that Android also suck resources themselves thoroughly. But Google has a lot of money and many geniuses on the payroll, see what they surprise us in the future. That yes, like Palm, they start from scratch in applications and they know it, so have decided to release the source code and do everything possible so that everyone can easily develop for Android. But look at Android programs do not run on Linux, running on the virtual machine developed by Google itself, so ALP and others who bet on Linux, they do not expect compatibility "out of the box" of these applications ...
- Apple ... does anyone see Apple making equipment for the midrange market-low? Well Steve Jobs is not stupid and knows that 85% of the market is big money. Conclusion? Next year we'll see iPhones cheaper and a loosening of the tight control exercised over the Apple Store, as happens with MacBooks will drop to 700 $. And the operating system is yours, so you can lighten it without relying on anyone. We'll see.
- Nokia is what you can do with your Symbian. Nokia raging in Europe in the handset market "normal" that 85% of which we speak, and has a good market share in the smartphones. Not rule out its revival, but has to work hard. Your operating system is free now, as Android, but is outdated, is limited and imposes its own programming lengaje. At least today there are already enough software for Symbian. And do not think that Access and Nokia are to compete, given that he has done is that Access can run PalmOS applications in Nokia Nseries.
In short, only Nokia, [Palm] Apple and Google can assume the responsibility of ALP in this new market for midrange phones with features of smartphones, the next goose that lays golden eggs. Head start at the beginning can guess everything, and Windows Mobile is still a burden for companies who bet on him. Google has overtaken Microsoft in the network, it would be strange to see the same in the market for mobile handsets ... Finally, we must not forget that Access has one of the few Web browsers able to keep up the Mobile Opera and Safari iPhone: Netfront Browser.
In short, the race has begun, millions of people are out there, wanting to discover and buy advanced phones that cost between $ 60 and $ 200, and that's a lot of money. ALP at its best at this, others (who have the ability to move fast enough, or have learned to anticipate the situation) I think I know taking positions, and as always seems to find out is not known include Palm [Edited: to unless they have a secret of his commitment to PalmOS? ] And Microsoft ... but we've buried so many times already, and there remain. Time will tell.

that's ok!!
Unaware that Nova would not run PalmOS applications. If so is a nonsense (no longer surprise me none of these people ... ...) barbara and would have to bet on Access to full.
Let's wait and see what happens, ALP is very attentive to me ... It seems that you will have to create a new area ...
I do not understand is if you can download and start playing trying to boot on my TE2
For indeed even today in spite of its weight, rather slowly and have neither my phone or camera to the LifeDrive was a step ahead of its time, I finished mine completely, thanks to a post yours
but I'm very thankful for so much power get to my machine, I've had several HTC models, Sony and more but nothing has filled me, I only need to prove the IPhone, but I'm from Mexico, at the time the LifeDrive cost up to $ 8,000 Mexican pesos but today the iPhone becomes as much as $ 15,000 MXP and then .... if both are worried to have a Palm device accessible, seeing what Apple ... almost do not mind the price but the quality, of course we talked for more capacity, cellular, camera, accelerometer and more etc ... but we talk almost 5 years !!!!!!!!!! ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ bestiality in technology think that way to dispose of the LifeDrive was a sharp fall so close to reach people, even today I am still willing to buy another as I endured much more than X and Windows Mobile devices with lots of DOE that if applied could build again as we all know ... the keyboard is already a nuisance, the more screen better, and that perhaps can not put a virtual keyboard!! well I think we should have a Palm user meeting for the people there understand what we really want as a Treo brings me up to the hilt and never really caught my attention and I really hope that the ALP of the width of what is now required, because if the battle had started 5 years ago PALM would be king and experienced team and not as now in agony more than expected by all and that even his Guru has dropped (by the way also is a fan of LD) and if it continues there will be no follower to accompany him to the grave. I hope one day you do an analysis of what I write here.
Greetings.
@ Liberda: Nova do that run PalmOS applications (or so we think). My memory played a trick on me. To see how the thing has just really, PalmOS seems more demand than ever.
That scare you gave me Mark ... .. Anyway, hopefully see what happens. Personally I'm trying to recruit the best possible information ALP because it really is something promising. But I tell you one thing, the last I see a course for the palms. With ALP, DGOS and Nova (the latter still not "tangible" DGOS although unlike many people think that Nova is a rumor) as we have a lot more than what we had for months (and that ALP is released until it was too dismissed as rumor or canceled project).
In my hands I had many devices. I PalmOS5 on PDAs with a Clie UX-50 and Zire 72, I had Windows Mobile 5, 6 and 6.1 with an ETEN X500, Symbian from different generations (including the 3rd and last) with a Ngage and N95-3 and Finally went back to Palm with a Treo 680.
Of course not to mention that I was home for a long time (thanks to my partner of chatting is also a fan of gadgets) a TX, Treo 650, a Eten X500 + (higher resolution than the 500) and an Iphone and even a PSP (not go thinking that I compare a PSP with a PDA but it's as funny as they diversify the things people on forums saying "I'm going on PalmOS, PSP seduced me" ... ... Just because I quote a post that we have a community that I manage)
I say this because I talk a lot about each of the platforms (RIM test would fail me but I am not really called) but my last choice speaks for itself. I had moments when he thought he would not return to the PalmOS because until I return to the long time away.
Fanaticism clouds, but most do it with illusionism cheap mobile OSs today the day that are really pure eye candy. I say, there are programs like WM or Symbian Technicion, the Butler, or Power Hero. And that I speak only of a developer.
Nor can you have the domain of your PDA as the memory cache to handle the same as you want (CleanStart, ResetDoctor), dynamic memory (UDMH), or create cache for quick access to cards (Softick cache).
The answer is easy, PalmOS is the most hackable mobile OS I know. But also the philosophies differ. While SPB (company that develops soft for WM would say is the best developer for this platform) create useful applications (but far from being as above) and recontra to be pretty heavy on PalmOS you got people who really cares this last very little and goes straight to the point and lets you manage your platform to your mind.
Finally an answer to the user "Sinico. Of the Treos thought the same as you, and that the physical keyboard was a waste of screen space as well. But I must admit I'm wrong. Puta have no idea what that is comfortable and useful. And I say, THROUGH write a touch screen, is far worse. I think it is just a fad (applying this to the PDA-Mobile Smartphone or modern).
Only useful as he says, if the only use you give it to PDA. (and I speak with knowledge of the cause).
Greetings
Thank you very much for your consideration, Liber.
I too am delighted that so many suddenly willing to dance with PalmOS. When a few months ago I decided to buy a new computer, I saw a much more stagnant, and perhaps encouraged to try new things, I opted for Windows Mobile.
I can not complain, and I was pleasantly surprised when I used to change not so much productivity is lost. Of course I spent a pure PDA to a mobile phone, I would have liked to have used a PalmOS Treo to compare apples to apples.
To be honest, what I leaned back on PalmOS was DbCache memory. Knowing that sooner or later end up resetting the phone did not seem like something nice, and knew how far he had solved this problem in newer computers. If not, I had not imported anything myself a Center. In that sense I can not be more happy with Windows Mobile on my HTC P3300 still rock solid.
In a few months and will team with Nova ALP, as well as Android has appeared, and teeth begin to get longer. I enjoy my team a few years, and over time, when things are stable, has plenty of applications and have been polishing the original problems I'll probably have a team with one of these operating systems. Perhaps by then while Windows Mobile will not even be at the height of its competitors.
Regarding the physical keyboard, I have not ever tested a smartphone, but I've never been a proponent of virtual keyboards, especially when the computer is not powerful enough to make it responsive. By god, I write messages much faster on the keyboard of my Nokia.
Then something happened to me similar. I always had cigars with PalmOS PDAs and go to WM for the same reason as you. I spent months with a great team (an ETEN X500, the really hard not mention it, since nothing is missing) and gradually the shortcomings of OS to top note jerks began to bother me when I saw that they had no solution.
Yet I was much with him, you get the juice and one day I said "I want change." He put on sale and offered me a Treo 680 more money.
After thinking about it, we fixed the money difference and made a change not previously thought: OSS hardware. Because that was my Eten had WiFi, BT 2.0, GPS, more memory and processor (although the latter really only be appreciated if they run the same OS).
I did and I can not be more pleased, in fact just showed me the 680 and I saw the PalmOS eyes glittered.
One thing I would like to discuss: The PalmOS is very versatile and more PalmOS5 it substantially changes the team thing.
It is not the same have a Zire, a Clie, an LD, a Zodiac or a Treo for more in-depth using the same OS.
It's something that I can now confirm. We note with my Zire to move to a Clie, and I notice it now using this great OS as a PDA-phone.
MrAnderson, wants to buy a HTC and I recommended your page. I always say it's best to try for yourself so you do not stay in the position of saying, "Never use WM" quite the opposite. Use it. Then over time I will say that is better.
Greetings
