Do not miss more on the ground with Metro

I like when the PDA show everything that can be useful for everyday use. And Metro is a free program that does just that. This is a guide to public transport networks in over 300 cities around the world. This includes networks of subway and bus regularly. Besides the data is updated continuously. You can stay abreast of changes, among other methods, through his blog.

The interface is easy to use and very fast

The Metro team is doing a great job, as well as the great effort involved in maintaining the databases, the program has versions for PalmOS, PocketPC, MS_Smartphone, Symbian UIQ / SonyEricsson, Symbian S60/Nokia, Symbian S80/Nokia and Symbian S90/Nokia. As if that were not enough, so you can use online through this link. In addition, it is currently translated into 38 languages.

Then ready the main features of this program:

  • Search stations assisted.
  • List of stations for each line.
  • History that keeps the last lines used.
  • It has data from the hours of operation of each line
  • List of places of interest (tourism, nightlife, etc) and detailed information about them.
  • It allows off lines when there is work or strike.
  • It uses colors to differentiate the lines.
  • List of stations for our contacts (only need to enter information once).
  • Separate files for each city. The only copy that we will need, saving space.
  • Compatibility with external memory card.
  • Tip of the fastest route, and that goes for less seasons.

You know, if you will have to live for a time in a big city, Metro is going to save you a lot of time and headaches. Remember to have it updated!

Program in BASIC and applications for your Palm

The first time I began to plan something on my computer, a 286 with 512Kb of RAM that still walks by my room, I did in BASIC. That's why I brought fond memories to find iziBasic.

iziBasic is a BASIC compiler for Palm. According discussed in Palm247 the first thing that draws attention is the ease with which one can begin to make a small program. It also has support for both the creation of applications such as graphics, text only. If you have any BASIC virtue is its ease of learning, and it lets you seen this program that is also very easy to schedule something for PalmOS. In fact incorporates a number of functions that allow it to simplify things in other languages are much more complicated. For example there is an instruction that draws a button on the screen, and only need parameters as the coordinates, width, height and the text. Any rookie will operate easily programmed with this environment in a short time.

Example of a program done with iziBasic

iziBasic is just a compiler. The code you must write to the editor that we want, even as a Memo. The result is programs that work without having to install any additional software on the Palm, where they will face. The features that score high in the creation of our programs are:

  • A window "About" customizable.
  • Buttons
  • Checkboxes
  • Buttons with image
  • Labels
  • Fields for entering text / numeric
  • Menus
  • Detection of pressing keys hardware

In short, a very good way to begin to experiment with programming in our Palm.

Organizers of ideas (aka Outliners)

When we need something to aim quickly, by default we have the Notes application for taking notes show of hands or small drawings, Memos to save text annotations, and the list of tasks to sort things we have to be done by assigning priorities and dates maturity.

But sometimes, we need something a little more advanced, allowing save the ideas in a hierarchical, for example with a tree structure, and with the functionality to go pointing the percentage completion of each task, for a glimpse of how you overall progress. In addition, for large categorized lists, the process of entering text in Palm if we do not have a wireless keyboard can become very slow, so that no evil would be able to edit these lists in the tree from a program on our PC.

This year I needed a program aiming to go well during my career draft order, the various parties are still to be done, to test ideas, texts to be included in the documentation or tutorials that I wanted to look more calm. That is why I decided to test these porgramas called Outliners, or organizers of ideas, and they also have their most useful if they are always available in our PDA.

Given the great demand that appear to have these programs, we can find many for Palm. I'm going to comment on the three that I tested: Progect, Bonsai and ThoughtMaster:

  • I will try Progect first, because it is free software and free. Fulfills its mission well, although it is the simplest of the three. Although the page appears to stop the project since 2004, developers continue to communicate with users through this yahoo group. The part that is synchronized with Progect on the computer, is a separate project, whose name is Pdesk. I tested the latest version of both and work correctly on PalmOS 5.

  • Bonsai is another outline, is to pay, but it's a great program. It is more complex than Progect, allows some more details, link to our applications Tasks and Notes, icons to define the tasks and so on. Bring including both the program that is installed in the PDA and running on the PC. It was worth a try.

  • The other Outliner that recomeindo is ThoughtManager. Like Bonsai is to pay, but worth it. Aesthetically it is less worked Bonsai, and may have some less, but in daily use I've seen that meets what I needed.

Any of the three allow well-organized ideas, so I try all three before choosing which one to use. We can see on the page ThoughtManager examples of how sometimes we can come either a Outliner:

  • Teachers can create lesson plans to teach, and point to the progress of these.
  • For project managers, a Outliner is the ideal application to maintain well-ordered information on the progress of the projects, and the members of the group. For this task there is another more specific program of the same company that created Bonsai, called Project @ Hand, which is even compatible with Microsoft Project.
  • People working in service technician to maintain lists of solutions to try and remember what have been tested by each customer.
  • A priest could also use it to prepare their sermons, but do not know if this will be very normal.
  • Doctors and nurses can keep the progress of treatment and progress of each patient.
  • Students can keep your notes in class, and tasks organized.
  • And for people in general, these programs can do the shopping list, the planning for a holiday, a camping, or any other activity that requires a check list.

Now you can send faxes from the Treo

I have found in The Blog of Leo already can send faxes from the Treo. The page program CS Fax is this. In palManiac a summary report on the program conducted by PalmDubai.net. The most important features are:

  • Support for endorsements: receive a fax, sign and return.
  • Automatic detection of the type of network so that only you can install it and send faxes.
  • The annotations are made directly on the fax. With the stylus can encircle words, stress, etc.. All they would do with a pen!
  • Templates: You can save faxes as templates, and then add the text and send them without changing the original.
  • You can make notes on the covers, as you would with a fax paper.
  • Drawings can be used to create the annotation drawings and diagrams quickly

With this program, because there was no reason to stay in office marking time, waiting until it reaches an important role.

The PDAs are still some unknown to the general public

Today Zebus has done a aloud reflection with which I fully agree.

Like all the years that I have since I bought the first pda, I wanted everybody to see everything that is capable of making these devices and wanting to be the best-selling gift for Christmas so we can have more friends with whom talk, comment on and things to tap into these devices.

But year after year I still do not start seeing increases in sales and always stay ahead of other devices.

This Christmas which could be conducive to this long-awaited BOOM and emerging market devices that are putting aside to PDAs, I mean the console, digital cameras and mp3 simple (Xbox 360, PSP, iPod, Nintendo Ds, etc. ...) If a lot of what makes these devices can be made more or less with PDAs.

Maybe if Palm, show a little more publicity and venderores many shops do not advertise PDAs as simple agendas but pretty expensive, you could reach that BOOM that users of PDAs that we want to reach.

We will have to overcome ourselves that BOOM.

Let's be realistic, we all know what a PDA was by chance. Or a friend had pileup that we had never seen before, or pass through the area of the store of technology that has those devices that do not know that noses are worth. I consider myself a great fan of technology, and yet I did not see an up this year that I used in college for an internship. But if it were not for this chance, would continue without knowing anything about them.

It is time they decide to sell to the general public as something more than "the screen where the information comes out of the car's GPS", which is the only role as sellers have (no more than take a stroll for any large area generalist).

Lords of Palm, spend a few euros in advertising, generate excitement, dense released. I made it difficult to think of something more appealing than a small, lightweight device that makes so many things, has a very attractive design, a huge geek factor to use each and every one of the buzzwords of the moment (bluetooth, wireless, portable, computerized , Etc) and above is feasible always carry over to all parties, not as a piece of notebook computer, and on the other side without having a ridiculously small screen such as mobile phones. Every time I see the millions of iPods to be sold, which in the end only worth listening to music, or PSPs, which remains a somewhat portable video game device, I imagine what would happen if they finally put fashion PDAs .
